There are several reason why a crown may be the proper course of action for your teeth. If a tooth is weak or broken from being worn down or from decay, a crown can cover the entire top portion of the tooth to stabilize it from further deterioration and aesthetically fit in with the rest of your teeth. There are several types of crowns that we could use for you depending on your situation:
Temporary Crown
These are typically used once it is determined a crown is needed and we need to wait for the laboratory to make the permanent crown. They protect the tooth from heightened sensitivity and can provide valuable information about how they feel and look for the dentist to use in fitting the permanent ones. Temporary crowns are made with a plastic or acrylic and are secured with dental cement so care should be used when eating since they are not as strong as real teeth.
Permanent Crown
Permanent crowns are made at the laboratory in about three to four weeks from a mold done at our office. The permanent crown should be strong enough to last as long as your other healthy teeth while providing the all the support and aesthetic appeal of natural teeth. There are a few materials permanent crowns can be made of.
Metal crowns consisting of gold, palladium, or other base metal alloy are the strongest and will consequently last the longest of other substances. We can also use porcelain or ceramic covered metallic crown make it less noticeable for more exposed teeth. A total porcelain or ceramic crown will provide the best match to surrounding teeth.
